Ep 12: Interview on Sino-Vietnam Relations

For this episode, I have invited my friend Jon Formella onto the podcast to share his research and thought on Sino-Vietnam relations, his work with think tanks, his experience as a Fulbright in Taiwan, among others. We started the conversation with Jon’s research project and how he got into the field of International and World History, then touched on some of the literature that inspired him to study Chinese and Vietnamese, and more specifically Sino-Vietnam relations. Jon has also done legal search while interning at the NYU US- Asia Law Institute where he helped legal scholars translate Chinese articles into English and research Chinese history, so he shared his experience and thoughts on the legal industry as well.

As a global citizen and student of international history, Jon continuously find interest and inspiration in the diverse and radically different. After completing his masters in world history with Columbia University and London School of Economics, he is excited to engage with scholars and contribute to a better understanding of the understudied nations and political ideologies of the world. In his future research, Jon hopes to explore the transnational history of Marxism-Leninism in Russia, China, and Vietnam and answer questions related to how different permutations of this ideology has influenced revolution and development in these nations with particular attention to industrial and agrarian working people.
